In the traditional sense of the word, relocating to a new home or business location isn’t considered an eco-friendly activity. Considering all of the used packing materials and supplies that are ultimately discarded into the trash, the fuel consumption used to power heavy-duty vans and trucks (especially in long-distance and interstate moves), and everything else that goes into the moving experience, it’s safe to say that relocation isn’t exactly easy on the environment.
However, as the need for sustainability arises, moving and storage companies have become increasingly conscious of their impact in the environment. At Charlotte Van & Storage, we’re inspired by stories of moving companies and other businesses that have found ways to reduce their harmful impact on the environment and are doing all that we can to continue to adopt these changes in our own practices. In this article, we’re sharing an inspiring story about a moving company in Florida and how it’s managed to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels completely.
Florida Moving Company Builds Solar-Powered Warehouses
According to a recent Fox 4 News report from South Florida, a well-known moving and storage business, William C. Huff Moving and Storage Company, decided to build a solar-powered warehouse or storage facility to power its warehouses.
The report states that a few years ago, Jim Henderson, the owner of the company, became concerned about the environment and the company’s massive carbon footprint. As he realized that pollution in the area was increasingly becoming worse, Henderson decided to convert his entire operation to solar—becoming a leader in solar-powered energy in the area.
In order to address this, he built a solar farm that can power its warehouses entirely. This solar farm has 528 panels that generate 137 kilowatts of electricity, which is enough to power almost 20 homes. Up to this day, this moving and storage company is considered a leader in solar power energy.
